Goin' Steady

Well, it's official. The National Academy of Sciences and I are officially together. We're a package deal now. Two peas in a cozy little pod.

Yes siree, this former temp working as an editorial assistant is now a permanent staffer as a senior editorial assistant! Woo-hoo!

When NAS and I met just 3 months ago, I was at a very low point in my job searching endeavor. I thought, I'm just a lowly editing minor with no real world experience. Who'd want to hire me? But then I met the Academies. NAS knew exactly who I was, and yet it was willing to give me a try. NAS was charming, encouraging, and it gave my first opportunity to enter the world of technical editing (my dream), and, well, I was lovestruck from the beginning.

Three months later, having just accepted the permanent position on Friday, I am in awe that I was able to come into this job. I have the chance to talk to editors and freelancers, learn from editors with decades of experience, monitor publications schedules, and more recently, start my own editing and management of other copyeditors' work. My coworkers are wonderful people who I'm lucky to count as my friends. They're the kind of people who take me out to a healthy restaurant because it accommodates my food allergies. The kind of people who will burst into laughter with me when the job gets completely crazy. The kind of people that I desperately hope I can be more like.

The job isn't without its struggles, what with stressful deadlines and contractors who do crazy things in Microsoft Word on a daily basis (it's NOT InDesign, people. Stop pretending it is), but I honestly wouldn't change a thing. I want it all. The whole package.

As we come up to our 3 month anniversary together, NAS, I want to say thank you. Thank you for taking a chance on a BYU grad who wasn't sure her education would mean anything in the real world. Thank you giving me the chance to commute into Washington, DC—the most beautiful city in the world—every day. Thank you for helping us pay off school debts, for giving me real, valuable experience on my resume, and for giving me a sense of purpose every day I wake up.

Most of all, thank you for believing in me enough to want to keep me around.

Happy Anni, NAS.
